Building 173*
52min - China
Directors: Charlotte Mikkelborg, Petter Eldin

East Coast Premiere
A building is a volume of human history, holding within its pages the stories and secrets of generations. BUILDING 173 in downtown Shanghai has witnessed three quarters of a century of the most dramatic upheaval in modern Chinese history. The stories of seven families including the son of a gangster; a Western-educated diplomat; an opera star; a worker and a high standing communist party cadre allow us to be a first-hand witness to life, death and survival and shed new light on China's turbulent recent history. BUILDING 173 uses a unique combination of contemporary footage and overlay animations to bring this building, and Chinese history, to life.
* Building 173 will be screened at Peabody Essex Museum's Morse Auditorium on Sunday Feb 28th at 2pm. This is the only screening of this film. It is free to Salem residents and PEM members - others pay museum admission. The film screens with short film, Waiting for a Train.
